Steven Joseph

​Guitarist, Composer, Performer, Royal School of Music

​

Liverpool born, Steven took up guitar at the early age of 5. In 2005 he was awarded a place at the world famous Chetham’s School of Music. 2007 saw Steven being awarded a coveted entrance scholarship to study at the RNCM with Craig Ogden and Gordon Crosskey.

Steven has performed extensively throughout the UK as both a soloist and chamber musician. Notable recent performances include Steven’s solo London debut at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint at the ‘Future Everything 2011’ festival in Manchester, with the composer present; Vivaldi’s Mandolin and Lute concertos at the first ever ‘Classical Music Night’ in Sheffield; 3 world premieres at the 2010 Sounds New Festival in Canterbury and solo recitals at Manchester Guitar Circle, Hyde Town Hall and Whitworth Art Gallery.

As a lover of contemporary music, Steven has had the privilege of giving many world premieres of solo and ensemble works. Also Duncan Ward, Yunhee Lee, Mark Houghton and Daniel Green have all dedicated works to Steven.

​Recent competition successes include reaching the final of the RNCM’s prestigious Gold Medal Award 2010 and being the first guitarist to ever do so; First prize in the regional final of the Lions European Music Competition 2009 and reaching the final of the Haverhill Sinfonia Competition 2010.

 

​Steven is currently undertaking a Masters degree with tutor Gary Ryan at the RCM in London after being presented with a Draper's Music Scholarship, a John Lewis Scholarship and a generous award from the Countess of Munster Trust.
